Charles Robert Gibbons, age 81, of Edina, Missouri passed away on Monday, September 2, 2013 at the home of one of his sons in Glastonbury, Connecticut. He was born on November 8, 1931 in Knox County, Missouri, the son of Patrick Henry Gibbons and Josephine Weber Gibbons.
Charles was educated and raised in Knox County, Missouri. He served his country on active duty in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 and as a reserve with the United States Army until 1960. On February 11, 1956, in Edina, Missouri, he was married to Barbara Lee (Baskett) Gibbons. After their marriage, Charles and Barbara moved to Colorado and then later to California where they resided for seven years. In 1964, they returned to Edina where they owned and operated a plumbing business for 35 years and were also engaged in farming.
Charles was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edina. He was awarded a National Defense Medal and was designated as Expert (Rifle) Ltr PMGC and Sharpshooter Rifle M-1 Par 18 SO 22. He enjoyed farming, hunting, and spending time with family and friends.
Charles is survived by eight children, Charlene Elaine Strickler and her husband, David, of Edina, Missouri; Carolyn Lee Gibbons of Columbia, Missouri; Catherine Ann Hettinger of Edina, Missouri; Robert Charles Gibbons and wife, Lisa, of Glastonbury, Connecticut; Richard Patrick Gibbons and wife, Heather, of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts; Roger Michael Gibbons and wife, Donna, of Lake Ozark, Missouri; Russell James Gibbons and fiancé, Lori Benigar, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; Crissi Patricia McClain and husband, Greg, of Springfield, Missouri; twelve grandchildren, Christopher Lane Hettinger and wife, Michelle, of Novelty, Missouri; Nicholas Charles Hettinger stationed in Logar, Afghanistan; Ann Elizabeth Hettinger of Memphis, Missouri; Samantha Marie Gibbons, Charles Robert Gibbons and Angela Mary Gibbons of Glastonbury, Connecticut; Boone Patrick Gibbons, Holly Marie Gibbons and Gracie Leah Gibbons of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts; Travis Jason McClain and wife, Candice, of Springfield, Missouri; Michael David McClain of St. Louis, Missouri; and Morgan Gibbons McClain of Springfield, Missouri; four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Lee Gibbons, on April 5, 2011; a daughter, Angela Marie Gibbons; his parents, Patrick Gibbons and Josephine Gibbons; three brothers, Francis Gibbons, Paul Gibbons, and Patrick Gibbons, Jr.; and three sisters, Mary Lindsay, Ella Mae Fisher, and Rose Ann Pfeifer.
Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, 2013 with the family receiving guests from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri. A rosary service will begin at 7:00 p.m.
A Mass and Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 9, 2013 at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Baring, Missouri.
The Reverend Father Joseph Hoi will officiate the services and music will be provided by Jim and Kyle Clark.
Casket bearers will be David W. Strickler, Jr., Gregory D. McClain, Travis Jason McClain, Michael David McClain, Charles Robert Gibbons, and Boone Patrick Gibbons.
Burial with full Military Honors will be held in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Edina, Missouri. Conducted by the Knox County American Legion and VFW Posts.
